Periodontal Scaling and Root Planning Post-Op Instructions
Scaling and Root planning is an extensive procedure. However, most patients experience little or no post-operative discomfort. The most frequent complaints are slight tenderness of the gums and sensitivities.
Here are some helpful reminders:
- Avoid eating until numbness wears-off. Healthy soft diet starting today for 1 week.
- Avoid chewing on the treated side for 1 week.
- Use Ora Care mouth rinse after brushing and flossing for 2 weeks. Use the mouth rinse until bottles are finished for at least once a day.
- Brushing and flossing daily helps to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth. This is crucial for fighting your periodontal disease.
Sensitivity
Sensitive teeth are very common after the treatment. Sensitivity usually disappears within 1-2 weeks.
- Avoid cold drinks/foods while teeth are sensitive.
- Brushing 2-3 times a day with prescribed toothpaste. (Refer to your Hygienist/Doctor)
- Use Ora Care rinse as recommended. (Instructions listed on bottle)
- In rare instances where sensitivity persists, please refer to your dental professional.
Important
Several days after the treatment, your gums should appear pink, less swollen, and bleed less. These are signs of healing and improved periodontal health.
- Maintenance appointment should be scheduled every 3 months.
- 3 month maintenance cleaning is REQUIRED to monitor progress and the treatment of your periodontal disease.
